Camu Camu
We’re still lingering in this in-between season, where some days are warmer than others, and the fluctuating temperatures can challenge the immune system. That’s why I’m focusing on immune support, and one of my go-tos is Camu Camu—a huge vitamin C powerhouse. To give you an idea of its potency, camu camu contains around 50 times more vitamin C than an orange.
Camu camu is a small, tart berry that grows in the Amazon rainforest, primarily in Peru and Brazil. It thrives in swampy or flooded areas along riverbanks. Let’s dive into why this superfood has become a favorite of mine.
Immune System Support- Camu camu’s vitamin C and flavonoid content is incredible for enhancing the production of white blood cells, which are vital for a strong immune system. Its antioxidants (like flavonoids and ellagic acid) combat oxidative stress, a key factor in inflammation. Traditionally, it’s been used to fight viral infections like herpes and shingles.
Glowing Skin - Packed with vitamin C, camu camu promotes collagen production, which keeps skin elastic, youthful, and healthy. It also aids in wound healing.
Stress Support - This berry is a natural ally for managing stress, thanks to its role in regulating cortisol levels. By supporting stress management, it also indirectly strengthens your immune health, showing just how interconnected everything is.
Gut Health and Nutrient Absorption - One of the more surprising benefits is how camu camu supports the gut lining. It also helps your body absorb iron, which is especially helpful if you’re dealing with anemia or nutrient deficiencies. Its anti-inflammatory properties are fantastic for soothing the gut, particularly for those with inflammatory bowel conditions.
Mood Boosting - Camu camu contains magnesium and amino acids, which help produce serotonin—the "feel-good" chemical. This can naturally regulate mood and reduce symptoms of anxiety or depression, making it a gentle but effective way to support mental health.
Gentle Detox for the Liver - Camu camu also plays a role in liver support, helping with detoxification by neutralizing free radicals and reducing inflammation. I think of it as giving your liver an extra helping hand.
Eye Health - Finally, camu camu is fantastic for eye health. It contains carotenoids like lutein, which protect against age-related degeneration and UV damage.
Camu camu comes in many forms, but the ones I come across most often are powder and capsules. Personally, I prefer the powder—it’s easy to mix into smoothies and gives them an extra kick of nutrients.
