Face Steam
I caught a little virus while traveling, likely from all the coughing I encountered during my trip—no surprise there! For those flying around for Christmas, I’d recommend taking extra care (and maybe even packing a mask, which I wish I had done). Luckily, it wasn’t severe, just lingering, so I focused on boosting my immunity and leaning into my self-care routine.
One of my rituals that made a big difference was a sage and peppermint face steam. I immediately felt everything loosening up and clearing out.
I use sage because it’s antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and grounding—perfect for purifying and calming. Peppermint, on the other hand, is refreshing and energizing, with menthol that clears congestion and opens airways.
This is an ancient remedy that’s both simple and effective. I also like to do this when I’m feeling my best, it improves circulation, helps your skin absorb nutrients from your skincare more efficiently, and is a sweet break from work or technology. While I love using sage and peppermint for their effects, you can play around with other fresh or dried flowers and herbs like lavender, calendula, ect.
Here’s How to Do It!
Boil the Sage (and a little bay):
Add 1–2 bay leaves and a few sage leaves (fresh or dried) to the pot of water.
Bring the water to a gentle boil and let it simmer for 2–3 minutes to extract their robust and grounding properties.
Steep the Peppermint:
After turning off the heat, add a handful of peppermint leaves or 2–3 peppermint tea bags to the hot water.
Let them steep for about 1–2 minutes to release their refreshing and uplifting aromas without losing their delicate compounds.
Steam:
Clean your face before starting the steam
Position your face above the pot, drape a towel over your head to trap the steam, and enjoy for 5–10 minutes.
Breathe and Relax
Close your eyes and position your face about 8–12 inches from the bowl. Take slow, deep breaths for 5–10 minutes, adjusting the distance for comfort.
Post-Steam Care
Pat your face dry, apply a nourishing moisturizer or face oil, and drink water to stay hydrated.
I hope you enjoy this as much as I do! Create a little home spa for yourself—light a candle and play some good music, It’s such a simple way to care for yourself.
